Welcome to CBE
The Council for
the Built Environment (CBE) is a statutory body established in
terms of the Council for the Built Environment Act, 2000 (Act
No. 43 of 2000) (CBE Act). The CBE Act was passed by Parliament
in November 2000 and became operational in September 2001. The
Minister of Public Works appointed the twenty members of the CBE
in January 2002 and the CBE was launched and held its first
meeting on 8 April 2002. The appointed Council reflects the
spirit and the intent of the Act. The members were appointed on
the strength of their experience in their particular fields of
expertise and their commitment to the advancement of the built
environment professions.
The CBE Act was introduced in order to address certain
shortcomings in the built environment and to enable a climate
for ongoing transformation and development of the professions to
take place. In terms of the CBE Act the Council is, amongst
others, responsible for transforming the professions, acting as
a conduit
between Government and the built environment professions,
fostering growth of the professions, and contributing to the
creation of a dynamic built environment.
